Deep Dish Ugly Apple Pie

Jump to Recipe

This Deep Dish Ugly Apple Pie is a favorite for my husband. He actually requested it for dessert for his birthday dinner. Tender sweet apples paired with cinnamon and sugar in a flakey crust, who doesn’t like Apple Pie.

I probably should bake more, but desserts are usually not on my mind much. They’re fabulous to enjoy and eat, however they’re not a main staple at my home. As you can tell by the picture, making a pretty decorative crust isn’t my thing either, hahaha. Hence the name; Deep Dish Ugly Apple Pie.

I personally don’t enjoy all the extra crust on a pie, but rather prefer just enough to offset the filling. This apple pie is made in a deep dish pie pan. Here, my Pampered Chef Stone Pie Plate, works perfect every time for a deep dish recipe.

I measure out all my ingredients and get them ready before I start. I find this as the easiest method when cooking anything. It helps ensure you have everything needed and then it’s all at your fingertips as you put your dish together. Shown below are one of my favorite items for prepping, the 1-Cup Prep Bowl Set. I have two sets of these actually since they are so versatile in the kitchen from serving sauces, prepping ingredients for your recipe, snacks or leftovers.

To save time, I use store-bought pie crust. Homemade crust is just as good. It’s all a personal choice.

In a large mixing bowl you add your sliced apples, then sprinkle on the dry ingredients and mix well. The Mix “N Scraper is another favorite utensil in my kitchen. I think it’s a must-have for every home cook and baker. The Mix ‘N Scraper is a heavy-duty scraper and spoon in one. Use it to mix, then easily scoop and scrape food into your pan or serving dish. I use it to even serve.

Lay your first pie crust in the bottom of the Deep Dish Stone Pie Plate and work until it’s formed against the dish sides evenly. Then add your filling. This filling will rise above your dish and it’s perfectly fine because as the pie bakes, the apples will cook down. Plus it keeps full pie.

Lay the top pie crust on top of the apple mixture and carefully pinch together the bottom crust and top crust together and fold under if needed. It will not be neat. Of course, if you prefer a prettier pie, take the time to mold the crust together. Carefully cut vents in the top.

Wrap foil around the edges to keep the crust from overcooking.

Place your Deep Dish Stone Pie Plate on a cooking sheet and put it in a preheated oven and bake for about an hour. About 40 minutes into the bake, you will remove the foil from the edges. Let your pie cool on a wire rack. Serve by itself or as my husband likes it, with Vanilla Ice Cream.
